Scrimshaw is one of a handful of truly original American folk forms and has had a long history on Nantucket Island. It was begun in the early 1800s by Yankee whalers who occupied long hours at sea by engraving pictures and designs on whales teeth and bone for there loved ones at home.

Traditionally, an engraving tool the size of a large needle was used to scratch or "draw" on the sourse material. Then an application of india ink was rubbed into the recessed lines scratched on the surface. The excess ink was then wiped away, providing contrast and bringing the pictures to life.

All ivory trade is regulated by the US government, each piece is numbered and registered with the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
