When the Mortgage is paid on a home, a hole is drilled in the top of the banister on the staircase. The Mortgage is either rolled up and placed inside the hole or burned and the ashes are placed inside. A Mortgage Button is placed over the hole, usually with the date scrimshawed on the back with the owners initial on the top. This is a very old Nantucket custom. Mortgage buttons make great housewarming gifts.
